The Concept

The heart of downtown

Once the city’s main pharmacy, the Apotek building has been at the centre of things for over a century. In fact, it was the first large building in Reykjavik, and the downtown area grew around it. Today the city buzz continues to revolve around its classy facade and elegant corner entrance. Combining rich period details with contemporary chic, Apotek welcomes you to the vibrant heart of the city.

The architect

From its stylish exterior, to the original Art Nouveau features within, the Apotek building is a cherished corner of the city. The curved walls, graceful marble staircase and original sculptures within give you the sense of its reputation as an architectural gem. Built in 1917, it was an early design by one of Iceland’s most influential architects, Guðjón Samúelsson. From this success, Guðjón went on to become state architect, creating many other classic landmarks, such as the Sundhöllin swimming pool and the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church.

The bar-restaurant

Apotek’s stylish bar-restaurant is a designer delight. Blending contemporary elegance with original wood and marble features, it creates a vibrant, relaxed setting for good times. Looking over the downtown streets on two sides, it’s the perfect place for people-watching, an intimate meal or mixing it with the locals. You might want to follow the menu’s delicious modern cuisine with something tasty from the in-house patisserie. Or even re-live Apotek’s past, with a pharmacy-themed cocktail from the bar – from Painkillers to Stimulants!
